Why We Sell Logs By Volume and Not Weight

We sell our kiln dried logs by volume rather than weight. This is the fairest and most useful way to measure firewood because the weight of logs can vary considerably even when the actual amount of wood supplied is roughly the same.

Different Woods Have Different Weights

Not all hardwoods weigh the same.

Oak is a particularly dense hardwood and is considerably heavier than many other species. Birch is less dense and therefore lighter. This means that a cubic metre of Oak logs will normally weigh more than a cubic metre of Birch logs, despite both loads taking up exactly the same amount of space.

If we sold logs purely by weight, you could therefore receive fewer Oak logs than Birch logs for the same stated weight. By selling logs according to volume you have a much clearer idea of how much firewood you are actually receiving and how much space it will take up in your log store.

Moisture Also Affects Weight

Water is heavy and the moisture content of firewood has a significant effect on its weight. All of our firewood is kiln dried and supplied with a low moisture content, but wood is a natural product and there will always be some small variation between individual logs. It wouldn't make much sense for you to pay more simply because one batch of logs contained slightly more moisture than another. Selling by volume removes much of this variation from the equation.

Loose Logs and Stacked Logs

There is another important difference to understand when comparing volumes of firewood: whether the logs are loose or stacked. A cubic metre bulk bag is filled with loose logs. There will naturally be air gaps between those logs.

A cubic metre crate contains logs which have been stacked much more neatly. Stacking reduces the amount of empty space between each log, so a stacked cubic metre contains more actual firewood than a loose cubic metre. This is why you shouldn't necessarily compare two products simply because they both have "1m³" in their description. How the logs are packed matters too.

Firewood is a Natural Product

Logs aren't manufactured to an exact weight or density. Every tree is slightly different and individual logs vary in shape, size and density. We think selling firewood by volume is the simplest and most transparent way of doing it.

Our small nets, handy bags, barrow bags, bulk bags and stacked crates all give you a clear indication of the quantity of logs you are buying. You can then choose the format that best suits your storage space, how often you use your fire and how easily you need to move the logs around. If you're unsure how much firewood you need, just speak to our team and we'll be very happy to help.
